Vienna vs. Budapest as Central Europe Destination. We have been planning a 3 week trip to Central Europe. Four days in Prague, then to either Budapest or Vienna on our way to a ten day trip through Croatia. Our original plan was three-plus days in Budapest, but friends are either strongly or mildly suggesting Vienna over Budapest. Munich is probably a good choice, assuming airfare price is comparable. the airport is very easy to navigate, and you have good public transportation to get into town, or if you rent car the hotels by the airport are well priced. i have never used the airports in prague and budapest, but judging from the train stations they're not in the same class as munich. overall germany is just like the

Prague has an amazing preserved Jewish district, but almost no Jews. Budapest has fewer "remarkable" Jewish landmarks but a thriving and growing and active Jewish community that creates an atmosphere that is hard to find an equal to. Vienna isnt warm and fuzzy on the subject. In Budapest you wont find much that predates 1800 for two reasons.

Day 1: Start on the Pest side of the city. That's home to the huge Dohány Street Synagogue. It's one of the great landmarks of Budapest and reigns as the largest synagogue in Europe. From there, head to the wide boulevard of Andrássy, a spectacular thoroughfare and UNESCO site that's lined with Neo-Classical mansions.
Day trips from Budapest to Vienna are pretty common for shopping or for the theater or some event. So this isn’t a big deal in the eyes of the locals. The Westbahnhof train station is about 10 minutes by taxi from St. Stephen’s in Vienna (pretty central to the tourist district).
Florence - 1-2 nights. Cinque Terre - 3 nights ( Montorosso) Switzerland - we have friends that live in the Berner Oberland and will be staying with them for 7-8 days. Austria - Zell Am See - 2-3 nights. Hallstatt - 2 nights. Vienna - 3 nights. And then finish up with 2-3 nights in Prague or Budapest.
